The EDGE Café is much more than a place to grab a coffee — it’s a welcoming community space built on connection, recovery and kindness. Tucked away on the Brookfields Hospital site in Cambridge, The EDGE has become a safe and supportive hub where people can meet, share experiences and feel part of something positive.

The story of The EDGE began in 2013, when people with lived experience recognised that many individuals faced a difficult “cliff edge” after leaving treatment services. They wanted somewhere to continue their recovery journey — a friendly, non-judgemental place where people could connect with others, build confidence and feel supported. With help from Cambridgeshire County Council and local treatment services, capital funding was secured via Public Health England and, through the dedication of the local community, The EDGE Café opened its doors in 2016.

Sarah, the Café Manager, has been part of the journey since the beginning. In recovery herself, she heard about the project through her recovery network and brought with her a wealth of catering experience and a passion for homemade food. Sarah believes food brings people together, and at The EDGE it helps create a warm environment where people can learn new skills, enjoy meals and feel at home.

Recovery support is at the heart of everything The EDGE does. Gail Sawyer, the Recovery Hub Manager, coordinates activities including one-to-one support, group sessions, events and training opportunities. Alongside a team of peer mentors, Gail helps ensure everyone who walks through the door is greeted with understanding, empathy and a friendly face.

The EDGE is run by a wonderful mix of staff and volunteers, offering opportunities to gain experience, build confidence and be part of a supportive team. It is a true example of co-production, shaped and delivered by people with lived experience, supported by a guiding board.
